Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the Seventh Day Adventist community in Dominica should celebrate, following the passage of an act to amend the Seventh Day Adventist Church Incorporation.
The bill which was passed in parliament last night, seeks to amend the Seventh Day Adventist Church Ordinance to change all references to the Leeward Islands Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist to the East Caribbean Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist church.
According to Skerrit, members of the religious organization have waited more than 15 years for this change
“I am sure that they are happy this evening because they have been requesting this for more than 15 years now. Government appreciates the tremendous contribution that the church has been making in Dominica. Education, health, community spirit, housing are just a few areas that they have assisted Dominica,” Skerrit told Parliament.
He made reference to a government decision several years ago to assist with the salaries of teachers at the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School in Portsmouth.
He also noted that the Ministry of Education will also seek to engage in discussions with the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School in Roseau about a possible relocation.
According to the prime minister, the numbers are growing and the current location, downstairs the church building, is seemingly becoming too small.
